Threshold of the Self
Mixed Media Fine Art Canvas by Lisa Bayer
Artist Statement
What if the moment before you change is the most important one of all?
Threshold of the Self explores the quiet space between who we have been and who we are becoming. The figure stands before a circular portal—formed by nature, yet symbolic of something far deeper. It is not just a passage through space, but a passage inward, toward truth, clarity, and self-recognition.
The circle represents wholeness and the infinite nature of identity. It holds no beginning and no end, only continuity—suggesting that transformation is not about becoming someone new, but returning to what has always existed beneath the surface. The threshold itself becomes a moment of awareness: the pause where we see clearly, where we feel the pull of something greater, yet have not fully stepped into it.
There is no movement, no urgency—only presence. The figure does not rush forward, because true transformation does not come from force. It comes from recognition. From the quiet understanding that the life ahead is shaped by the willingness to cross that invisible line.
Discription
Threshold of the Self invites the viewer to reflect on their own moment of becoming—the space where fear and possibility coexist, and where the decision to step forward begins long before the first step is taken.
Threshold of the Self is a contemplative and symbolic artwork that captures the quiet, powerful moment before transformation. A solitary figure stands at the edge of a circular portal woven from nature, gazing out toward an expansive landscape that stretches into the unknown. The scene feels both grounded and otherworldly—like a doorway between who we have been and who we are becoming.
The circular form represents wholeness, cycles, and the infinite nature of identity. It acts as a threshold—a sacred passage inviting the viewer to step beyond limitation, fear, and familiarity. The figure’s stillness reflects a moment of inner awareness, where clarity begins to emerge and the decision to move forward takes shape.
Surrounded by lush greenery and open sky, the piece evokes a sense of calm, possibility, and quiet courage. It speaks to the deeply personal journey of self-discovery—the moment when we stand at the edge of change, aware that crossing forward means stepping into a new version of ourselves.
With its serene palette and symbolic composition, Threshold of the Self brings a sense of openness, introspection, and gentle transformation to any space. It serves as a reminder that growth often begins not with action, but with the willingness to stand at the threshold and see what lies beyond.
