Artist Statement

What if the reflection we trust is only a fragment of who we truly are?

In Distorted Reflections, the surface of water bends and fractures the image of a face, transforming something familiar into something uncertain. The calm expression remains steady, yet the rippling lines interrupt the continuity of identity, suggesting that what we see is never entirely whole. The reflection becomes both mirror and distortion, revealing how perception can reshape reality.

The water acts as a boundary between inner truth and outward appearance. Beneath the surface lies a deeper emotional landscape—memories, thoughts, and quiet struggles that rarely reveal themselves fully. Though the face appears serene, the shifting reflection hints at the subtle turbulence that lives within.

Discription

This work explores the fragile relationship between self-perception and the images we project to the world. It invites viewers to question the reliability of reflections and to consider how identity itself is fluid—continually shaped by memory, emotion, and the quiet currents moving beneath the surface.

The piece explores the fragile relationship between self-perception and the images we present to the world. As the water distorts the reflection, identity becomes fluid—suggesting that who we are is constantly shaped by memory, experience, and unseen emotional currents.

It invites the viewer to pause and consider: Are we seeing ourselves clearly, or only the reflections shaped by the surface we look through?

Distorted Reflections is a contemplative surreal portrait that captures the tension between inner emotion and outward composure. The image portrays a woman’s face partially submerged beneath rippling water, where delicate waves fracture and repeat her reflection. Light moves across the surface, creating a hypnotic interplay between clarity and distortion.

The composition balances serenity with unease. While the subject’s expression appears calm, the shifting water introduces a subtle disorientation, symbolizing the complex layers of identity that exist beneath the surface of everyday perception. The artwork invites viewers to reflect on how emotion, memory, and self-awareness continuously reshape how we see ourselves.

With its soft lighting, fluid movement, and emotional depth, Distorted Reflections brings a quiet, introspective energy to any space. It serves as both a striking visual centerpiece and a symbolic meditation on perception, identity, and the ever-changing nature of the self.
